Rita Marley becomes A Ghanaian Citizen

As part of ‘The Year Of Return’, President Nana Akufo-Addo has granted Ghanaian citizenship to 126 Africans in the Diaspora including Rita Marley, the wife of reggae legend Bob Marley.

Rita Marley has been residing in Ghana for more than 10 years. Through the Rita Marley Foundation, she has been helping the less prevailed.

The new Ghanaian citizens took the oath of loyalty to Ghana. The ceremony was held at the Accra Jubilee House.

The Year of Return is a government initiative to celebrate 400 years of the slave trade. The event that began in January 2019 saw many people visiting the country.

This year celebrates 400 years since a small group of captured Africans was imprisoned in an English vessel in Jamestown, Virginia in the United States.

In 2016, it is believed the Former president John Mahama, also granted citizenship to some Africans the Diaspora.

The coming back of the African Diaspora is economically pragmatic for Ghana, apart from sentimental reasons.

The government relaxed visa requirements for some countries earlier this year and halved the price of a visa upon entry in anticipation that heritage tourism would carry much-needed cash…
